I'M A RESEARCHER
I am a passionate advocate for military, veterans and their loved ones. I believe that we must expand our body of research into these populations. In particular, I am interested in female veterans, veteran transition and PTSD.
I'M A TEACHER
I believe that student and teacher are partners in the learning process. I seek to leverage the experiences of my students in the classroom; making the material relatable. Through the use of dynamic lecture, interactive discussion and relevant assignments, I help my students connect with material in new ways, expanding their knowledge.
I'M A SOCIAL WORKER
From my roots as an investigator with Child Protective Services in Washington DC to my years of service in the US Military, I have sought to see not just the client seated before me, but rather the entire community system. This focus on system and individual has shaped my practice.
Teaching Philosophy
I believe that knowledge is complex but, through interaction between instructor and student, it can be shared and expanded. I respect that each student brings into the classroom a wealth of personal experience and knowledge. As an instructor, I use these experiences, coupled with my own, to deliver information in a way that is meaningful to the student.
I understand the importance of culture in the effective practice of Social Work and strive to respect the unique cultures of each student. I also believe in challenging my students in their understanding of and assumptions about other cultures in the classroom so that they will become competent and aware practitioners.
I believe that by modeling empathy towards my students, I encourage them to do the same towards clients, coworkers and their community.
Through dynamic lectures, interactive classroom discussion and meaningful assignments, I encourage my students to become excited about the material and curious to learn more and expand their knowledge. I want this curiosity and excitement to turn into a thirst for lifelong learning. I seek to help them find balance between service to others and care of themselves, reducing burnout and increasing job satisfaction.
My goal is to educate the next generation of professional Social Workers; shaping and growing the profession through them.

"I’ve come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that’s as unique as a fingerprint – and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, working hard, and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you."
